CCUS, a Growing Technology for Net Zero Emission

Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS) is a technology of CO2 capturing and store it underground or use it in other industrial production processes. The idea was first applied in oil production field known as “Enhanced Oil Recovery” (EOR) since 1970s.

As CCUS technology is expensive in terms of industrial-scale implementation, investment of the technology was declining for years. However, CCUS is considered as the best way for decarbonization and is currently gaining more attention since 2017 because of the stronger climate targets and investment incentives around the world. In addition, CCUS is accounted for one of the five key areas for clean energy transformation in China.

Moreover, in order to reach the net zero emission goal, CCUS technologies could offer significant strategic values as followings:

  1. Existing power and industrial plants, which could produce 8 billion tons of CO2 emission in 2050, can be added with CCUS.
  2. CCUS can be applied in sectors where other technology options are limited.
  3. A least-cost low-carbon hydrogen production can be enabled by CCUS.
  4. CCUS can remove CO2 from the atmosphere by combining it with bioenergy or direct air capture to balance emissions.

As mentioned above, CCUS is gaining momentum and could be applied in diverse industrial processes which are emitting huge amount of CO2 to atmosphere. Therefore, this technology is a potential tool for reducing CO2 emission and getting to the net zero goal in the near future.
